Lucille Hegamin papers, 1894-1969.

The collection consists of the papers of Lucille Hegamin from 1894-1969. The collection includes correspondence, financial material, photographs, original music scores, and printed material. Correspondence is both business and personal and includes letters from her recording company, fan mail, and a letter from W.C. Handy. Photographs are of Lucille Hegamin, her friends and family, and other performers in Harlem. The music scores are manuscript transcription of her famous tunes. The collection also includes a small number of advertisements for her performances and published sheet music, a set list, and various mortgage documents.

Lucille Hegamin (1894-1970), African American blues singer. She was born Lucille Nelson in Macon, Georgia on November 29, 1894. After singing with local church choirs and touring at the age of 15 with the Leonard Harper Stock Company, she moved to Chicago, Illinois. Known as the "Georgia Peach," Hegamin performed in local cabarets, performing with Florence Mills, Ada "Bricktop" Smith, Cora Green, Tony Jackson, and Jelly Roll Morton.
